Obituary for Bruce D. Fies

Print
Bruce D. Fies, 96, of Laureldale, passed away September 30, 2018, at the Manor Care of Laureldale where he had been a guest for one month.

He was the widower of L. Jane Fies, the love of his life, to whom he was married for almost 57 years.

Born in Mohrsville, he was the son of the late Chester M. and Elsie (Drenkel) Fies.

Bruce was a 1941 graduate of Muhlenberg High School where he was a four-sport athlete. During the 1940-1941 season, he was unscored on as a soccer goalie, and the team went on to win the Berks County Championship and the District 3 Championship. The advent of World War II prevented the boys soccer team from playing in the State Championship.

In November 2008, Bruce was inducted into the Muhlenberg High School Hall of Fame for his accomplishments on the athletic field.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He continued to participate in athletics as a Marine and won multiple medals with his Marine division. Bruce is a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Marine Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII and Pacific Theater Medals.

Bruce worked for many years for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Laureldale, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Laureldale.

He is survived by his children, Scott N., husband of Susan E. Fies, of Riverview Park; and Robin J., wife of Marshall D. Deweese, of Cape Cod, Mass.

Other survivors include his son-in-law, Barry Butterweck; five grandchildren: Allison (Fies) Clark, Shawn Deweese, Lauren Deweese, Bobbi Butterweck and Marci (Butterweck) Harr; 4 great-grandchildren: Bode Wentzel, Brady Wentzel, Tanner Harr and Owen Harr; his companion of almost 2 years, a rescued yellow Lab named Trixy.

Bruce is predeceased by his daughter, Diana B. (Fies) Butterweck; his companion of 8 years, a Collie named Lady Jane.

Services will be Friday, October 5, at 10 a.m. in Milkins Giles Funeral Home Inc., Temple. Friends and family may visit Friday morning from 9 a.m. until time of the service in the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Maidencreek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Bruce's family asks that donations be given to the Special Olympics, 1133 19th St. NW, 12th floor, Washington, DC 20036-3604, the ASPCA, Attention Gift Processing Center, P.O.
